No one would deny that Elena Gilbert has lost more than any one person should have to take throughout the run of "The Vampire Diaries" so far, including her own humanity. But the loss of her brother, Jeremy, proved too much. She spent much of the episode in denial that he was gone, until finally the enormity of it sunk in. To say she snapped is a bit of an understatement.
Elena made the decision to burn the house down with Jeremy inside of it. There was simply too much pain in those walls for her and she never wanted them to surround her again. But it was the pain inside of her that was killing her.
Stefan pushed Damon to use his sire bond to help Elena with her grief, but he didn't anticipate that Damon would tell her to simply turn it off. Turn off all of those human emotions. Just like that, her face went from grieving to stone. She still, however, determined to burn the house down, and that's what she did.
