Fifteen people in Saudi Arabia have died from a SARS-like virus out of 24 people who contracted it since last August, Health Minister Abdullah al-Rabia said on Sunday.

“The number of people who contracted the virus in the kingdom since August/September is 24, of whom 15 have died,” Rabia told a news conference in Riyadh.

An earlier toll provided on Tuesday by the World Health Organisation said 11 people had died in Saudi Arabia since last year from the disease whose medical term is NCoV-EMC, or novel coronavirus.

Rabia also said three other people are suspected of having contracted the virus in Saudi Arabia, pledging to announce with “full transparency” the results of their medical tests.

The WHO’s assistant director general for health security and the environment, Keiji Fukuda, told a Riyadh news conference on Sunday the new virus posed an “important and major challenge” for countries affected and the world generally.

He said experts were still grappling to understand all aspects of the virus and how humans become infected, stressing, however, that “this new virus is not the SARS virus.”

“This is a new infection and there are also many gaps in our knowledge that will inevitably take time to fill in,” a WHO statement cited Fukuda as saying.

“The greatest global concern, however, is about the potential for this new virus to spread. Of most concern, however, is the fact that the different clusters seen in multiple countries increasingly support the hypothesis that when there is close contact this novel coronavirus can transmit from person-to-person,” he said.

“This pattern of person-to-person transmission has remained limited to some small clusters, and so far, there is no evidence that this virus has the capacity to sustain generalised transmission in communities.”

Since the virus was first recorded in September 2012, there have been 34 cases reported worldwide, and 18 of those have died, according to the WHO.

While it has been deadliest in Saudi Arabia, cases have also been reported in Jordan, Germany, Britain and France where two patients are now in hospital in the northern city of Lille.

It is a cousin of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), which triggered a scare 10 years ago when it erupted in east Asia, leaping to humans from animal hosts and eventually killing some 800 people.

An atheist student in Oklahoma has faced a backlash after contacting the Freedom From Religion Foundation about Ten Commandments displays posted in his high school’s classrooms.

Gage Pulliam of Muldrow told Patheos on Saturday that he wanted to remain anonymous, but decided to reveal his identity after other students were blamed for alerting the organization. He said his younger sister had faced verbal harassment over the issue and some students had threatened violence against him.

“I want people to know this isn’t me trying to attack religion,” he explained. “This is me trying to create an environment for kids where they can feel equal.”

After contacting the Freedom From Religion Foundation, the organization send a letter to Muldrow High School administrators warning that religious displays in public schools violated the U.S. Constitution.

“If the facts are as presented to us, and the Ten Commandments are on display throughout Muldrow Public Schools, the displays must be removed immediately,” FFRF attorney Patrick Elliott said.

A number of students responded by organizing a petition in favor of the Ten Commandments displays. As many as 250 students signed the petition.

“It’s a pretty big deal,” student Chase Howard told television station KHOG. “One person kind of put it out there on Twitter. A couple of us hash tagged it and asked people to get it trending. After that it just caught on.”

The Muldrow First Assembly of God also stepped into the controversy, offering free Ten Commandment T-shirts to any student.

The school board plans to address the complaint on Monday. Muldrow First Assembly of God senior pastor Shawn Money said he expects hundreds of Christians to show up.

The brothers of the US man charged with kidnapping and raping three women, locking them in his home for a decade, said they had no idea what was happening, in an interview aired in part on Sunday.

“If I knew that my brother was doing this, I would not be, not — in a minute, I would call the cops because that ain’t right,” Pedro Castro, 54, told CNN.

“If I knew, I would have reported it, brother or no brother,” he added.

Pedro and his youngest brother, 50-year-old Onil, were arrested soon after their brother Ariel Castro on Monday, when the three women, and a daughter born to one of them while in captivity, were discovered at Ariel’s home in Cleveland, Ohio.

But Pedro and Onil were later released, with police saying there was no evidence they participated in the crimes.

In the interview, both said they feared they would never fully be freed of the suspicion raised after police announced their arrest and made their mug shots public.

“It’s going to haunt me down because people going to think, yeah, Pedro got something to do with this. And Pedro don’t have nothing to do with this,” Pedro said.

His brother, Onil, concurred, adding, “The people out there that know me, they know that Onil Castro is not that person and has nothing to do with that. Would never even think of something like that.”

The two, and their 71-year-old mother, are in hiding, saying people have thrown rocks at their homes and sent them death threats over the Internet, CNN reported.

Ariel Castro, a 52-year-old unemployed bus driver, was arrested after one of the victims, 27-year-old Amanda Berry, managed to call out to a neighbor, who kicked in the door to the suspect’s home and rescued her and her six-year-old daughter.

Police arrived on the scene and entered the house, finding two more women: 23-year-old Gina DeJesus and 32-year-old Michelle Knight. All three had been snatched in separate incidents around a decade earlier.

The prosecutor has said investigators would go back over the many torments Castro allegedly inflicted on the women during their long ordeal, with the aim of bringing additional charges, including ones that may carry the death penalty.

Castro was ordered held on an $8 million bond on Thursday.

Former US defense secretary Robert Gates warned Sunday that deepening US military involvement in Syria’s civil war would be a “mistake,” warning the outcome would be unpredictable and messy.

In an interview with CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Gates also said he saw “no good outcomes” in dealing with Iran’s nuclear program and warned that a full US withdrawal from Afghanistan would be “a disastrous mistake.”

Gates’ comments on Syria come amid debate in Washington over whether to step up military support for rebels fighting the regime of President Bashar al-Assad, even as the administration attempts a new peace initiative with Russia.

“I thought it was a mistake in Libya, and I think it is a mistake in Syria, even if we had intervened more significantly in Syria a year ago or six months ago. We overestimate our ability to determine outcomes.

“Caution, particularly in terms of arming these groups and in terms of US military involvement, is in order,” he said.

“Anybody who says, ‘It’s going to be clean. It’s going to be neat. You can establish safe zones, and it’ll be just swell,’ well, most wars aren’t that way,” he said.

Gates, who served under both George W Bush and President Barack Obama, was US defense secretary in 2011 when the United States joined a NATO-led air operation in Libya that helped rebels topple Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi.

On Iran, Gates said the best the United States can hope for is that sanctions bite deep enough that the regime decides to change course.

“If there is no military attack, and they don’t change their policies, you will probably see a nuclear-armed Iran igniting a nuclear arms race in the most volatile part of the world, emboldened to be even more aggressive and with missiles that can reach Israel now and Europe soon.

“But if you do hit them, then I think the consequences of their retaliation could spin out of control,” he said.

Gates, a former intelligence officer who helped oversee US support for Afghan insurgents fighting the Soviet Union in the 1980s, said a residual US force should remain in the country after 2014, when US troops are scheduled to come home.

“I will tell you this: For us to leave lock, stock, and barrel at the end of 2014, and abandon Afghanistan as we did after the Soviets left, would be a disastrous mistake.”

A 21-year-old Florida man was arrested Wednesday for allegedly receiving oral sex from a prostitute in return for crack cocaine in the front seat of a car while his two-year-old son sat in the back seat. According to Palm Beach, Florida’s WPBF, Silvestre Ramirez was arrested shortly after 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday.

A report from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Department said that an undercover deputy tasked with surveilling prostitutes saw a woman named Candace Henry get into Ramirez’ car. The officer followed as Ramirez drove to a house two blocks away.

Henry and Ramirez disappeared into the house, then emerged several minutes later. The officer then observed that Henry was performing oral sex on Ramirez.

As the officer approached the car, Henry burst from the passenger side door and fled the scene.

Ramirez was arrested and taken into custody. Arresting officers found the man’s two-year-old son strapped into his car seat in the back seat of the vehicle.

The 21-year-old was charged with solicitation of a prostitute and child cruelty. His bond was set at $13,000.

WPBF reported that police intend to charge Henry with prostitution “when they catch up with her.”

On Friday night’s edition of HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher,” Maher and a panel made up of writer Glenn Greenwald, commentator Joy Reid and National Review writer Charles Cooke discussed whether class issues played a role in the case of the three women who were held prisoner in the house of Ariel Castro in Cleveland, Ohio.

Maher began the discussion by questioning whether the story of the women’s rescue is that much of a “feel-good” story.

“I can’t tell,” he said, “because it ended well, or better than it could have. But it’s so awful to think about what went on before. And I get the feeling that it’s kind of a ‘Two Americas’ kind of thing when you look at that neighborhood.”

“If they were in a richer neighborhood, would they have spent ten years in that basement?” he asked.

He called to mind the invasion of Afghanistan and the existence of so-called “unincorporated areas” of Afghanistan and neighboring Pakistan where lawlessness reigns and no civil authority exists.

“It seems like there are some ‘unincorporated areas’ of America,” he said, “where we just don’t go, we don’t know, where people disappear very easily and it is kind of a ‘Two Americas’ thing.”

Cooke disagreed, but Greenwald said that he feels that everything, ultimately, is “a by-product of the poor-rich gap” in the U.S., that class dialectics play into every aspect of society. “Virtually every single institution,” he said, “has radically different treatment for people based upon your socioeconomic status and especially your race.”

Sudan’s security service on Saturday ordered the closure of a community forum, one of the independently run TEDx events held around the world, even though it was non-political, the organiser said.

“They unplugged the electricity,” Anwar Dafa-Alla, who founded Sudan’s version of TEDx two years ago, told AFP.

He said almost 1,000 people were attending the event at a luxury Khartoum hotel when officials stopped it before it was even half finished.

“We were only focused on the positive,” he said. “We don’t do politics.”

According to the TEDx website, all TEDx events are organised independently on a community basis but have certain common features, including “lack of any commercial, religious or political agenda”.

The New York-based TED is a non-profit agency “devoted to ideas worth spreading,” the website says. TED holds two major conferences a year and offers the $1-million TED prize.

Sudanese rights and cultural groups said earlier this year they were under attack after some non-governmental organisations were ordered to close.

The state minister of information and culture, Mustafa Tirab, told AFP in an interview on Thursday that the government “will do our level best to provide freedom of expression and freedom of speech for all those who are inside Sudan”.

The level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has broken above 400 parts per million for the first time in human history, US monitors announced Friday, indicating that climate change has reached a new high.

The data showing that the average C02 was 400.03 as of May 9 was posted online by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s monitoring center in Mauna Loa, Hawaii.

The air measurements represent conditions over the Pacific Ocean, and the data is still considered “preliminary,” pending quality control and recalibration checks, NOAA said.

A separate monitor at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego, California has not yet returned the same reading, with its latest data on May 9 showing that atmospheric carbon dioxide was at 399.73 parts per million.

The Earth has not seen these levels of C02 in millions of years, according to Bob Ward, policy and communications director at the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at London School of Economics and Political Science.

“The Earth has not experienced this level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere for about three million years, when global average temperature was two to three centigrade degrees higher than pre-industrial levels, the polar ice caps were much smaller and global sea level was about 20 meters (yards) higher than today,” Ward said.

“We are creating a prehistoric climate in which human societies will face huge and potentially catastrophic risks.”

Police in Texas are considering whether to charge a mother who decided to consult the website WebMD after a friend shot her son instead of taking him to the hospital.

According to KHOU, surveillance video recorded in a Houston home on Tuesday shows Pete Jesse Rodriguez “tracking” the 14-year-old boy’s movement’s with his pistol before pulling the trigger. The boy sustained a gunshot to the upper-left thigh.

After laying on the floor for several minutes, the teen reportedly got up and helped his mother Google WebMD.com for information on treating a gunshot wound. But after seven hours, the mother relented and took the boy to Mainland Center hospital.

The boy was later transported to Hermann Hospital, where he was in stable condition on Wednesday.

Rodriguez was initially charged with making false statements and then later charged with one count of injury to a child with intent to commit serious bodily injury. He was being held in lieu of $151,500 bond.

Police were investigating the possibility of charging the mother with felony injury to a child by omission.

Prince Harry, in the dress uniform of his British army regiment, paid tribute Friday to US soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan on day two of a US tour dedicated in good part to war veterans.

With white-gloved hands behind his back, he strolled alone through rows of white headstones in a section of the sun-kissed Arlington National Cemetery reserved for those who died in America’s most recent wars.

He wore the dark blue uniform of the Blues and Royals cavalry regiment, which he joined in 2006, together with a powder blue beret representing his role as an Apache attack helicopter pilot in the British army’s air wing.

On a floral arrangement, the prince left a handwritten note: “To my comrades-in-arms of the United States of America, who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in the cause of freedom.”

Harry, 28, who has twice deployed in Afghanistan, signed the black-bordered card with his formal name, Captain Henry Wales.

Later in the morning, Harry laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington, watched by a youthful crowd of T-shirted tourists kept at a distance behind a metal barricade.

From there he was to proceed to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center to mingle with US soldiers undergoing physical therapy and learn about the latest developments in prosthetics.

On the weekend, Harry will be in Colorado for the Warrior Games, where 200-plus wounded servicemen and women will compete in such sports as archery, cycling, swimming, track and field, and wheelchair basketball.

Harry, who last visited Washington a year ago, is on his best behavior after cellphone photos of him bare-naked while partying in a Las Vegas hotel suite spilled onto the Internet last August.

Like his father Prince Charles and older brother Prince William, he is assuming a bigger share of royal duties on behalf of his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II, who turned 87 last month.

Harry began his week-long US tour on Thursday with a visit to a Capitol Hill photo exhibit on land mine clearance efforts around the world — ignoring the dozens of excited young Senate staffers and interns who turned out to catch a glimpse of Britain’s most eligible bachelor.

He also popped into the White House for afternoon tea with First Lady Michelle Obama and US military veterans, in an event that did not feature on his official schedule.

Harry is the 25th anniversary fund-raising patron of the Halo Trust, the world’s biggest mine-clearing organization and a favorite charity of his mother Princess Diana prior to her death in a 1997 car crash in Paris.

Its director Guy Willoughby told AFP that if funding — including millions of dollars from the United States — can be sustained, all mine fields in post-conflict areas of Africa and Asia could be cleared in five to 10 years.

Next Tuesday, Harry will be in New Jersey to see first-hand the damage inflicted on the Mid-Atlantic state by superstorm Sandy in October. He’ll also attend a charity polo match in Connecticut before returning home.

New York City could be the first city in the U.S. to grant non-citizens the right to vote in municipal elections. According to Talking Points Memo, a measure currently before the New York City Council would allow qualifying non-citizens to vote in certain local elections.

The measure appears to have a veto-proof majority in that chamber, which would render the law untouchable by current New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Hearings are set to begin Thursday and supporters say that they believe the measure will be ratified into law by the end of 2013.

Councilman Daniel Dromm, who co-sponsored the bill with Councilwoman Gale Brewer told TPM, “This is extremely important, because it’s based on the founding principle of this country and that was, ‘No Taxation Without Representation.’ All of the people who would be included in this and would be allowed to vote are paying taxes, they’ve contributed to society.”

The “Voting by Non-Citizen Residents Act” would grant voting rights to immigrants who are “lawfully present in the United States” and have lived in New York City for at least six months. To register to vote, they would have to meet the same requirements as citizen voters in New York State, i.e., they must not have been convicted of a felony and they must not have been declared mentally incompetent by a court.

First time voters would be asked to present “copy of a valid photo ID, current utility bill, bank statement, paycheck, government check, or some other government document that shows your name or address.”

Mayor Michael Bloomberg opposes the measure. Through a spokesperson, his office said that immigrants with green cards who are paying city taxes should nonetheless wait for full citizenship to be allowed to vote, and that before they can be granted the privilege of casting a ballot, they should first be required to swear “allegiance to this country.”

“This bill violates the State constitution and the administration does not support it,” said spokesperson Evelyn Erskine. The New York Daily News said that the constitution only grants the New York State Legislature the authority to confer voting rights to state residents.

Supporters of the bill like Ron Hayduk, an author and founder of the New York Coalition to Expand Voting Rights, argue that New York City enjoys “charter city” status and therefore doesn’t need the state’s approval to modify its laws.

“There’s legal experts that are going to be testifying … that are going to make the case that New York City has the authority to enact this on its own and it will not come into conflict with any state law,” Hayduk said about the Thursday hearings.

“There may be others that dispute that and, if that’s the case, it may end up in the courts,” he said.

New York City would be the largest municipality in the country to grant non-citizens voting rights. Hayduk said that the law’s success, if it happens, would send ripples out through the rest of the country and through the immigration reform debate.

“It would send a big message to the rest of the country and embolden campaigns which are ongoing in other places like San Francisco, and Portland, Maine, and Washington, D.C., and other places,” he said. “It would certainly be viewed favorably by immigrants’ rights advocates and be seen by other policy makers as another level of discussion about the whole business of the role of immigrants in the United States.”

The website Gothamist suggested that Bloomberg fears the immigrant vote because it could potentially “drastically shift New York City’s demographics toward a more progressive electorate.”

The Republican Party chairman for the state of Illinois resigned on Tuesday, telling CNN that he’d lost the party’s support after endorsing marriage equality earlier this year.

“I’ve been going at it hard for six years, I need to focus on my family, and obviously I had lost the support of the state Central Committee because of my position on gay marriage,” Pat Brady reportedly said. Brady’s wife is also suffering from cancer.

His announcement comes just one month after Sen. Mark Kirk (R-IL) became the second Republican senator to endorse marriage equality, amid a debate in the general assembly on whether to allow same sex marriage in the state. That bill appears to be on the brink of passage in the House, and Gov. Pat Quinn (D) has indicated that he will sign it.

Brady, who’s run the Illinois GOP since 2009, has been trying to stave off party critics who’ve sought to have him removed ever since he announced his support for marriage equality. Attempts to do just that in February and April failed, but last month the GOP’s state central committee approved a plan to search for a successor. Brady’s resignation was all but certain after that.

“In stepping down, I want to express thanks to my wife, Julie and our four children,” he wrote in his resignation letter, which did not mention marriage equality. “Although the role will change, I will continue to be active in Illinois and national politics in a variety of capacities, including organizations supporting our candidates in the upcoming gubernatorial and congressional races,” he added.

A company that specialises in “Made in France” underwear has raised nearly 19,000 euros ($25,000) from enthusiastic investors banking on its next titillating creation — sweet-smelling underpants for men.

The so-called “Indomitable” briefs will be manufactured by “Le Slip Francais”, a company set up in 2011 by 27-year-old Guillaume Gibault, who decided to bank on a trend for all things made in France to sell underwear.

“You want to change the world, you want to change things, start by changing your underpants!” the firm writes on crowdfunding website www.mymajorcompany.com, where it has already raised close to 19,000 euros.

The idea behind crowdfunding is that anyone on the Internet can contribute money to a project, in some cases in exchange for shares in a company or other rewards.

Gibault told AFP the briefs will be scented thanks to micro-capsules full of homemade perfume that will be incorporated into the cotton used to make the underpants in the Lille region of northern France.

As soon as the lucky owner of the briefs moves around, the capsules will release the perfume and the scent will last up to 30 washes, he says.

“It’s quite a masculine perfume, not very strong, based on musk and pears,” he said.

“Le Slip Francais” has become something of a success story in France, which is suffering badly from lack of competitiveness and a general perception of hostility towards business owners and entrepreneurs.

It employs five people in its Paris headquarters, and outsources the manufacture of the underwear to factories in different parts of France, including Lille and the southwestern Dordogne region.

The firm has so far sold some 20,000 of its red, white, blue and black briefs, and plans to develop its presence abroad, with Japanese people proving to be particularly enthusiastic clients.

Gibault says the company is already profitable, adding that the whole project shows “that we are capable of innovating in France”.

“Le Slip Francais” had originally intended to raise 10,000 euros for the scented briefs, but has surpassed that amount by far and could still get a lot more before a June 3 deadline it set on its crowdfunding page — http://www.mymajorcompany.com/projects/sentez-bon-du-slip#home

Supporters will get a range of rewards for their donations, ranging from a key ring to becoming the face — or body of — the new underpants when the firm’s advertising drive begins.

An armed group on Tuesday abducted four UN peacekeepers from the Philippines in the Golan Heights, which has been hit by a mounting spillover from the Syrian civil war, the United Nations said.

The four were patrolling near the Al Jamlah locality in the ceasefire zone between Israel and Syria where 21 Filipino peacekeepers were seized by Syrian rebels in March, said a UN peacekeeping spokeswoman, Josephine Guerrero.

“An unknown armed group” took the men, Guerrero told AFP. “Efforts are underway to secure their release.”

The UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), which has been in the Golan Heights since 1974, has about 1,000 troops and civilian staff.

The 917 troops from Austria, India, the Philippines, Morocco and Moldova carry only very light arms.

The United Nations sent extra armored personnel carriers, ambulances and other security equipment to the force after the March abduction.

The ceasefire has seen increased hostilities from the two-year-old Syrian war with shells from the Syrian side falling onto Israeli territory and the Israeli military firing back.

UN leader Ban Ki-moon said in a report in March that there had been “continued, often intense, clashes between the Syrian armed forces and armed members of the opposition” in the ceasefire zone.

UNDOF peacekeepers had also “observed and reported instances of continued transborder movements of unidentified individuals, some of them armed” between Lebanon and Syria in the northern part of the ceasefire zone,” the report added..

“Since the beginning of January, the number and the frequency of such activities have increased,” Ban said.

Israel, which is technically at war with Syria, has occupied 1,200 square kilometers (460 square miles) of the Golan Heights, which it annexed in 1967 in a move never recognized by the international community.

The New York City Police Department is searching for four men who are suspected of attacking a gay couple after Sunday night’s basketball game between the New York Knicks and the Indiana Pacers.

Nick Porto, 27, told DNAInfo that he was walking arm-in-arm with his partner, 22-year-old Kevin Atkins, on Eighth Avenue when four men attacked them.

The couple said that they were repeatedly punched and kicked. After the attack, the victims were rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where Porto was treated for a broken nose.

Although police have not classified the attack as a hate crime, Porto said that he had no doubt.

“I’ve never had a feeling like this before in the city,” he explained. “I didn’t know that it’s not over, that this sort of stuff still happens.”

“They called us faggots,” Porto recalled. “They made fun of my jeans — I made the jeans myself, for that day.”

The NYPD released two surveillance photos of one of the four suspects early Tuesday morning. Investigators described him as a 6-foot-tall Hispanic man with brown hair and a tattoo on his left arm. He is seen wearing a white Knicks #7 jersey, a white T-shirt, blue hat and blue jeans.

Anyone with information about the suspects or the attack can contact NYPD Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or www.nypdcrimestoppers.com.

A former Kosovo health minister and another Pristina official are among eight suspects in a new EU probe into a human organ trafficking case, a local daily reported Tuesday.

Last Tuesday, a day after a European Union-led court in Kosovo convicted five doctors of harvesting and selling kidneys at a Pristina clinic, the EU’s Pristina mission announced the new probe without revealing the identity of the suspects.

It said they were under investigation for “organised crime, trafficking in persons, grievous bodily harm, abusing official position of authority, fraud and trading in influence”.

Alush Gashi, a former health minister, and Shaip Muja, who advised the Kosovo prime minister on health issues, are among the suspects, the Koha Ditore daily reported Tuesday, quoting anonymous sources from the EU prosecutor’s office.

The suspects “are expected to be charged very soon”, the paper said.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for EULEX, the EU mission in Pristina, could neither confirm nor deny the Koha Ditore report.

“The case is being investigated. It is just the beginning. EULEX does not want to confirm or deny the (published) names of the suspects in this case,” spokesman Blerim Krasniqi told AFP.

The eight are suspected of using their influence to cover up the case in which around 30 illegal kidney removals and transplants were carried out at the Medicus clinic in Pristina in 2008, the daily said.

The donors were recruited from poor eastern European and Central Asian countries and promised about 15,000 euros ($20,000) for their organs. The recipients, mainly Israelis, would pay up to 100,000 euros each.

Gashi and Muja joined Prime Minister Hashim Thaci’s government following 2007 parliamentary elections.

Meanwhile, Muja, commenting on the Koha Ditore report, said his conscience was clear.

“I’m not hiding from these things. I sleep in peace, because I know who I am,” he told reporters.

The five doctors convicted in late April included the owner of the Medicus clinic and prominent Pristina urologist Lutfi Dervishi and his son Arban. Of the five, Dervishi received the harshest sentence of eight years in jail.

EULEX was set up to help the local judiciary handle sensitive cases after Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008.

Tanzanian police have arrested two more people bringing to eight the number of suspects held following a deadly bombing at a church in which three people died, officials said Tuesday.

Four Tanzanians and four Saudis have been arrested in the wake of the bomb, one of the first such incidents in Tanzania, which President Jakaya Kikwete described as an “act of terrorism”.

None of those arrested have yet been charged, said Arusha’s governor Magesa Mulongo, updating the number of those killed to three, after one of the wounded died.

“We deplore the three deaths,” he said, adding that around 40 people remain in hospital, three in a critical condition.

Officials have given no indication as to who might have carried out the attack, but tensions have been high between Tanzania’s Christian and Muslim communities in recent months.

Officials have urged unity amongst Tanzanians.

“We must protect national unity, peace and tranquility of our country at any costs,” Internal Affairs Minister Emmanuel Nchimbi said Monday.

The blast occurred outside Saint Joseph’s Roman Catholic church in Arusha, a town popular with tourists visiting the popular Serengeti national park and snowcapped Mount Kilimanjaro.

The newly built church, in the Olasti district on the outskirts of Arusha, was celebrating its first ever mass at the time of the attack, and people were squeezed into the church building as well as sitting on benches outside.

The Vatican’s ambassador to Tanzania, Archbishop Francisco Montecillo Padilla, was attending mass at the church but was not harmed.

Kikwete, who said he was “shocked and deeply saddened” by the incident, called on people to remain calm while police investigated the attacks.

In February, a Catholic priest was shot dead outside his church on the largely Muslim archipelago of Zanzibar, the second such killing in recent months. A church was also set on fire on Zanzibar in February.

In March, 52 followers of controversial Muslim cleric Sheikh Ponda Issa Ponda were jailed for a year for riots in October in the commercial capital Dar es Salaam, sparked by rumours that a 12-year-old boy at a Christian school had urinated on a copy of the Koran.

Around half of Tanzanians are believed to be Christian, and around a third of the population to be Muslim, although there are no official figures.

In neighbouring Kenya — whose troops invaded southern Somalia in 2011, prompting warnings of revenge by the Al-Qaeda linked Shebab insurgents — several churches have been targeted in attacks similar to the Arusha blast.

While Tanzania does not have troops in Somalia, it is home to Islamist groups connected to radical groups in the wider region including the Shebab, according to United Nations experts.

Tanzanian police arrested six people on Monday including Saudi nationals over a deadly bombing at a church mass that President Jakaya Kikwete described as an “act of terrorism”.

Two people were killed and 64 wounded in the attack on the church in the northern town of Arusha on Sunday, officials said, one of the first such incidents in Tanzania.

“This is an act of terrorism perpetrated by a cruel person or group who are enemies of the country,” Kikwete said in a statement.

Four of those arrested are from Saudi Arabia and two from Tanzania, with police hunting for more suspects, officials said.

Officials have given no indication as to who might have carried out the attack, but tensions have been high between Tanzania’s Christian and Muslim communities in recent months.

“Investigations are ongoing,” Arusha’s commissioner Magesa Mulongo said, adding that the four Saudis arrested had arrived at Arusha airport on Saturday.

The two Tanzanians arrested were Christian, he added, but gave no further details.

Internal Affairs Minister Emmanuel Nchimbi told parliament that police and army explosives experts were examining the blast site.

“Preliminary investigations show that the bomb was thrown into the church compound, but we don’t know its nature,” Nchimbi said, adding that there were “indications that more people are involved”.

“We must protect national unity, peace and tranquility of our country at any costs,” he added.

“We are ready to deal with all criminals including terrorists and their agents who are based in the country or externally,” said Kikwete, who cut short an official visit to Kuwait following the attack.

Worshippers accused the police and the government of failing to properly protect them.

Ponda is the head of Jumuiya ya wa Islamu, or the “community of Islam”, a group not recognised by the Tanzanian government.

Last month, in the far south of Tanzania, police fired tear gas to disperse around 200 Christian rioters attempting to torch a mosque over an argument over who should be allowed to slaughter animals.

The Azerbaijani parliament on Tuesday approved a prisoner amnesty proposed by the country’s glamorous and powerful first lady that will likely see thousands of convicts released.

The move — put forward by Mehriban Aliyeva, the influential wife of strongman President Ilham Aliyev — should see some 2,000 prisoners, mainly women, disabled and elderly convicts, released and 7,000 more have their sentences cut, according to the new law.

“I believe that being able to forgive, with goodwill and humanity, can change a lot in this world for the better,” Aliyeva, who is a member of parliament, told the largely rubber-stamp legislative body before it approved the act without a debate.

Aliyeva’s husband Ilham — who in 2003 succeeded his father Heydar, a KGB officer and Communist-era boss, as president — has faced sustained criticism for the country’s allegedly poor human rights record.

Oil-rich Azerbaijan’s economy has boomed since Aliyev came to power, but rights groups say that freedom of expression is being suppressed and dissenting voices silenced.

Azerbaijani security forces earlier this year brutally suppressed several demonstrations including one over alleged hazing in the army and arrested scores of protestors.

Aliyeva, 48, was born into one of Azerbaijan’s most powerful families that, according to a leaked 2010 US cable, has amassed a fortune through its involvement in the country’s lucrative construction, financial and telecommunications industries.

Aliyeva is known for her love of sometimes racy designer clothes and according to the same leaked US diplomatic cables has allegedly undergone extensive cosmetic surgery and “appears unable to show a full range of facial expression”.

The amnesty act is intended to mark the upcoming 90th anniversary of the birth of Aliyeva’s deceased father-in-law, former president Heydar. It is expected to come into effect on Wednesday.

“Iron Man 3″ topped Chinese box offices five days after opening, state media reported on Tuesday, but the modified domestic version of the Hollywood blockbuster has raised some eyebrows.

The film starring Robert Downey Jr as the hero Tony Stark has earned 410 million yuan ($67 million) since last Wednesday, when it broke a national record with opening-day sales of 116 million yuan, Xinhua news agency said.

The Chinese release had four extra minutes, including the product placement of a local milk drink called Gu Li Duo touted as a source of Iron Man’s energy, the Hollywood Reporter said.

Also unique to the Chinese version was the appearance of “Dr Wu”, a character played by local actor Wang Xueqi, who in his limited screen time drinks a carton of Gu Li Duo and performs an operation on Stark.

Chinese viewers felt the added bits were “superfluous to the narrative”, the Hollywood Reporter said.

There was no immediate explanation for the additions. Chinese authorities normally cut foreign films, due to sexual and political sensitivities, rather than add to them.

In April the country’s cinemas abruptly cancelled all screenings of Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained” just as it was released, with one viewer adding that a showing was stopped after just one minute.

Nudity of the main character played by Jamie Foxx may have prompted the sudden censorship, the popular web portal Sina said at the time.

Scenes were also cut from the latest James Bond film “Skyfall”, including a killing in Shanghai, along with mentions of prostitution in Macau and torture by Chinese security agents.
