Police in Texas are considering whether to charge a mother who decided to consult the website WebMD after a friend shot her son instead of taking him to the hospital.

According to KHOU, surveillance video recorded in a Houston home on Tuesday shows Pete Jesse Rodriguez “tracking” the 14-year-old boy’s movement’s with his pistol before pulling the trigger. The boy sustained a gunshot to the upper-left thigh.

After laying on the floor for several minutes, the teen reportedly got up and helped his mother Google WebMD.com for information on treating a gunshot wound. But after seven hours, the mother relented and took the boy to Mainland Center hospital.

The boy was later transported to Hermann Hospital, where he was in stable condition on Wednesday.

Rodriguez was initially charged with making false statements and then later charged with one count of injury to a child with intent to commit serious bodily injury. He was being held in lieu of $151,500 bond.

Police were investigating the possibility of charging the mother with felony injury to a child by omission.

The New York City Police Department is searching for four men who are suspected of attacking a gay couple after Sunday night’s basketball game between the New York Knicks and the Indiana Pacers.

Nick Porto, 27, told DNAInfo that he was walking arm-in-arm with his partner, 22-year-old Kevin Atkins, on Eighth Avenue when four men attacked them.

The couple said that they were repeatedly punched and kicked. After the attack, the victims were rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where Porto was treated for a broken nose.

Although police have not classified the attack as a hate crime, Porto said that he had no doubt.

“I’ve never had a feeling like this before in the city,” he explained. “I didn’t know that it’s not over, that this sort of stuff still happens.”

“They called us faggots,” Porto recalled. “They made fun of my jeans — I made the jeans myself, for that day.”

The NYPD released two surveillance photos of one of the four suspects early Tuesday morning. Investigators described him as a 6-foot-tall Hispanic man with brown hair and a tattoo on his left arm. He is seen wearing a white Knicks #7 jersey, a white T-shirt, blue hat and blue jeans.

Anyone with information about the suspects or the attack can contact NYPD Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or www.nypdcrimestoppers.com.

An atheist woman with an incurable brain disease took her own life on Thursday in spite of Christians who insisted that she was a “sinner” and would “go to hell” if she went through with the assisted suicide.

The Winnipeg Free Press‘ Lindor Reynolds reported that 72-year-old Susan Griffiths made the decision to travel to Europe for legal assisted suicide after being diagnosed with multiple system atrophy, which includes a loss of bodily functions and severe pain.

Griffiths passed away on Thursday at a Switzerland clinic after drinking a poisonous mixture of water and pentobarbital.

“I have to go to Switzerland because there’s no such service in Canada for Canadians who are drastically ill and want not to live anymore,” Griffiths told the Free Press earlier this month. “But it’s what I want because I do not want to live in the conditions that I have now.”

In a letter to Parliament before she died, she urged lawmakers to legalize assisted suicide.

“It will not be for everyone and many will reject the very idea for various reasons, but please imagine yourself or a loved one in my position and support a free vote to give Canadians the right an privilege of choice in this most important and person decision,” she wrote.

And in fact, one Christian Canadian contacted Reynolds insisting that Griffiths had to know that she would “go to hell” if she went through with her plans to die.

“The day after my story about Susan ran, I got a phone call from a distressed man,” Reynolds recalled. “He wanted me to give him Susan’s number. He was a Christian, he said, and he needed to tell her she’d go to hell if she went ahead with her plans.”

“She was in Europe, I said, and an atheist with no belief in an afterlife. He insisted she was a sinner. I suggested, as gently as possible, that he add Susan to his prayer list. She was already on mine, I said. He said he’d pray she changed her mind. That was his right, I said.”

Earlier this month, a spokesperson for federal Justice Minister Rob Nicholson said that the Conservative-controlled government would not reconsider its position on the right to die.

An Orlando man was recently arrested for after he defecated in his own pants while admitting to police that the he shot up a public dock.

According to an arrest report published by TCPalm on Tuesday, the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of shots fired near the Gifford Docks in Vero Beach at around 9:20 p.m. on April 9 and found 44-year-old Michael Johnston.

The Orlando man verified that he had been drinking and firing weapons, and gave the officer permission to search the trunk of his car for a .45 caliber black powder pistol and a .40 caliber Glock pistol. Johnston explained that he had consumed at least eight alcoholic beverages, but said that the two cans of Colt 45 had been “too many apparently!”

The police report also indicated that a second man had been with Johnston at the docks.

After being read his Miranda rights, Johnston told the deputy that both men had been “drinking and shooting.”

“I am impaired,” the suspect reportedly said.

“Johnston was swaying while I was speaking to him due to his intoxication and defecated in his pants, which he admitted was from his intoxication,” the deputy wrote.

The charging document stated that at least 20 rounds were fired from both firearms at a glass bottle, resulting in “bullet holes and ricochet damage caused from multiple bullets on the dock’s walkway and pillars.”

“The dock shit is my shit!” Johnston said, referring to the bullet holes, not the poop in his pants.

He was charged with using a firearm under the influence of alcohol and criminal mischief, both misdemeanors. The deputy said that the damage to the docks was an “eyesore” and would need to be repaired “due to the negative impression that will be seen by visitors of county docks.”

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) says that he is prepared to make “all available resources” available from the federal government to assist in the recovery after an explosion at a fertilizer plant in Texas — but the senator voted against aid for victims of Hurricane Sandy earlier because he said it was “pork.”

The Dallas Morning News reported on Thursday that Cruz had reacted to the fertilizer plant explosion that killed dozens in West, Texas earlier this week.

“We are in very close touch with officials on the ground and we’re monitoring the tragic accident closely,” Cruz said in Washington. “It’s truly horrific and we are working to ensure that all available resources are marshaled to deal with the horrific loss of life and suffering that we’ve seen.”

In a statement on his website, Cruz added that “[w]e remain in communication with Gov. Perry’s office and emergency management officials, and stand to offer whatever support we can.”

But following the super storm that devastated much of the East Coast last year, Cruz was not as willing to part with taxpayer money.

According to The New York Times , the junior Texas senator voted against Sandy aid three times.

“Hurricane Sandy inflicted devastating damage on the East Coast, and Congress appropriately responded with hurricane relief,” Cruz said in a statement earlier this year. “Unfortunately, cynical politicians in Washington could not resist loading up this relief bill with billions in new spending utterly unrelated to Sandy.”

“This bill is symptomatic of a larger problem in Washington – an addiction to spending money we do not have. The United States Senate should not be in the business of exploiting victims of natural disasters to fund pork projects that further expand our debt.”

On Thursday, Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) also asked President Barack Obama for a “quick turnaround” on federal aid.

A letter address to President Barack Obama was being tested for the poison ricin on Wednesday.

A law enforcement source told CNN that the letter was “very similar” to a letter sent to Sen. Roger Wicker (R-MS) that tested positive for ricin on Tuesday. The Associated Press was also told that both letters were being treated in the same manner.

A Secret Service spokesperson confirmed to CNN that the letter addressed to Obama contained a “suspicious substance.” The letter was reportedly intercepted at an off-site mail facility and did not make it to the White House.

There were no indications that either letters were connected to the Monday bombings in Boston.

Fox News pundit Tucker Carlson had his peaceful fly fishing outing in New York City’s Central Park interrupted over the weekend by contributor to Howard Stern’s show.

The Hollywood Reporter on Monday reported that Joey Boots posted video of his confrontation with Carlson that first seemed like it could become antagonistic before the Fox News host began sharing his tips for catching the big one in the most visited urban park in the United States.

“It’s not very good fishing, there are too many people around,” The Daily Caller founder admitted. “There are largemouth bass.”

Carlson went on to ask Boots, who obviously did not recognized the television pundit, which cable news shows he watched the most.

“My favorite to actually watch news? CNN,” Boots said. “I also like Current, Current TV is good. They have a lot of interesting angles. It’s very left though.”

“Do you like [Keith] Olbermann?” Carlson wondered.

“I like Keith,” Boots replied. “He’s good. He’s not with Current anymore.”

“No, he’s not,” Carlson agreed in a very concerned voice. “Do you watch Fox?”

“I watch Fox,” Boots said. “I like to get my news from all over, and then I make up my mind in between all that.”

Boots later explained that Carlson had said that he worked in media, but had denied being employed by Fox News or having a Twitter account. Carlson accepted a job last month hosting the weekend edition of Fox & Friends. His Twitter account has almost 130,000 followers.

Catch-and-release fishing is legal in Central Park’s Harlem Meer, the Central Park Lake, and the Central Park Pond with a valid New York fishing license.

A New Hampshire police chief could have to pay up to $1,000 in fines after a 15-year-old boy killed himself with the officer’s service weapon.

Danville Police Chief Wade Parsons was expected to be charged with one count of negligent storage of a firearm on Friday for leaving his service weapon unsecured in his home, the New Hampshire Union Leader reported.

A State Police investigation determined that Parson had placed his weapon on top of a gun safe and then left the home to run errands while 15-year-old Jacob Carver, who was not the chief’s son, remained in the house on March 11.

Rockingham County Attorney James Reams said that the boy died later of a self-inflicted gunshot wound the the stomach.

“The statute holds you responsible for how you store weapons. It should have gone in a gun safe,” Reams explained on Thursday. “We just looked at the statute and the conduct. There’s no other option but to charge him. The statute reflects society’s concern that if you have a weapon and children, you have to take steps to make sure they don’t have access.”

It was not immediately clear if the weapon was owned by Parsons or the town of Danville, where Parsons has served as police chief since 1995.

Danville Selectman Shawn O’Neil said that he knew that Parson was “personally hurting” and charging him was “not going to bring Jacob back.”

“Deep down he’s a really good man. I have the utmost respect for this man. We all err as part of human life. Charging him with this is not going to make anything change,” Shawn O’Neil insisted. “If this kid was 16 years old this would not be an issue.”

Reams, however, said that he hoped the incident would be a lesson to other members of law enforcement.

“Nobody is probably more highly trained than a police officer,” Reams pointed out.

In a column published on Thursday, conservative pundit Ann Coulter joked that the killing of politicians’ children should “start with Meghan McCain.”

Earlier this week, Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MA) told MSNBC host Martin Bashir that he was sensitive to the need for more gun control because his nephew had been shot and killed several years ago.

Bashir suggested that members of Congress should not have to experience the death of a family member to understand that gun violence was a problem.

“But Congressman, is that what needs to happen to move these senators to stop threatening a filibuster?” Bashir asked. “Is that really what needs to happen? That you need to have a member of your family killed in order for you to do what the American people want you to do?”

Conservative websites interpreted Bashir’s statement to mean that he was advocating the murder of politicians’ family members.

And on Thursday, Coulter decided it would be funny to suggest the daughter of Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) should be the first to die.

“MSNBC’s Martin Bashir suggested that Republican senators need to have a member of their families killed for them to support the Democrats’ gun proposals,” Coulter wrote. “Let’s start with Meghan McCain!”

In a series of posts to Twitter, Meghan McCain said that the column was out of line.

“Apparently Ann Coulter made a joke about me being killed in a recent column,” she wrote. “I should expect nothing less but disgusted regardless.”

“My father is a very famous politician. My family gets a lot of threats. Joking about me being killed really isn’t funny or appropriate,” Meghan McCain continued. “People like ann coulter [sic] are part of the past and only live to spread hate and negativity. I literally couldn’t imagine living a life that seems so void of love, compassion, and perspective.”

Mother Cindy McCain added that Coulter “needs to get a life!”

Officials with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus say that Carol, a 39-year-old Asian elephant, is expected to fully recover after being hit by a bullet during a drive-by shooting in Tupelo, Mississippi.

“The elephant has sustained at least one bullet wound between her ear and, I guess you would have to consider it, the base of her neck area,” Tupelo Police Captain Rusty Haynes told WPTV.

Haynes said that authorities were looking for white or silver Ford Explorer that was seen behind the arena at the time of the shooting.

Bancorpsouth Arena Executive Director Todd Hunt called the incident a “black eye” for Tupelo.

“It was a drive-by shooting,” he said.

In a statement on Tuesday, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said that it would offer $5,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction of the shooter.

An openly gay man in New York says that the Catholic Church banned him from teaching religious instruction and his duties as a Eucharistic minister because he legally married his partner of 10 years.

Nicholas Coppola, 47, told WNBC that officials at St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church in Oceanside knew he was gay, but the church had to take action after receiving an anonymous letter complaining that a gay, married man was teaching religion.

“While not on a witch hunt, I know it would be of concern to you if a catechist were in fact ‘married’ as described,” the letter said.

Coppola pointed out that Rev. Nicholas Lombardi appeared to have “a very heavy heart” when the decision was made to ban the decades-long church member from his regular duties.

“You could see it in his face,” Coppola said. “I felt sad for him that he had to make this decision. In fact, he’s still struggling with this now and it’s sad.”

“Shunned, felt like somebody who wasn’t worth the effort,” Coppola told WPIX, recalling his reaction to the ban. “What was pointed out, you made a very public statement getting married, I think the question was asked why, I said I got married like any other loving couple.”

But the Archbishop of Washington on Easter Sunday explained to Fox News that he was worried that it was Catholics who would be shunned for opposing same sex marriage.

“The church is probably — with 20 centuries of experience — the most understanding of the human condition of any institution,” Cardinal Donald Wuerl insisted to Fox News host Chris Wallace. “But at the same time, it does remind not only gay people but heterosexual people, straight people, you’re not supposed to be following a moral law apart from what Christ has said to us.”

“The only thing I worry about is someone saying to me, ‘You, because you believe that sex is intended for marriage and because you believe that marriage is indissoluble and because you believe that marriage is between a man and a woman that somehow you don’t belong here, that somehow this is bigotry or this is hate speech.’ That’s what I worry about. There has to be room enough in a society as large, as free as pluralistic as America to make space for all of us.”

A group Massachusetts parents are outraged and at least one worker has been placed on administrative leave after about 25 students Robert J. Coelho Middle School in Attleboro were forced to throw away their lunches over concerns that they could not pay for the food.

Parents said that some students cried and went home hungry.

School officials told The Sun Chronicle that Whitson’s, the contractor responsible for providing lunches, made the decision to stop students from eating their lunch if there was not enough credit in the student’s pre-paid account or they were not able to provide cash for the meal.

Superintendent Pia Durkin on Wednesday said that the on-site director had been placed on administrative leave and Whitson’s had been instructed not to deny lunch to any student in the future.

“There is no way any child in my school district will ever go hungry,” Durkin insisted. “Children need to eat.”

A school policy requires that the cafeteria provide a cheese sandwich and milk to any student who cannot pay for regular meals.

“I’m pissed that when there are people in prison who are getting meals, my daughter, an honor student, is going hungry,” parent John Greaves told the paper, adding that he would have brought lunch money to the school if he had been notified.

In a statement provided to WFXT, Whitson’s apologized for the incident.

“We regret that these students were denied meals and agree that this situation should have been handled differently,” the statement said. “We apologize to the students and the community for this incident and are conducting a full investigation.”

The Kansas state Senate on Monday advanced an tough anti-abortion bill that would define life as beginning at fertilization, strip Planned Parenthood’s role in sex education and force women to be told about a dubious connection between abortion an breast cancer.

The state House has already passed the measure and the full Senate is expected to take it up on Tuesday. According to The Kansas City Star , Gov. Sam Brownback (R) has already said he would sign all anti-abortion bills and the Senate’s support “virtually guarantees” that it will become law.

House Bill 2253 would prevent all abortion providers from providing information to students in public schools, eliminate the exception that allows women to have a mid- or late-term abortion for mental health reasons, prohibit women from claiming abortion medical expenses on their taxes and force abortion providers to tell patients about a disputed link between abortion and breast cancer.

In addition, Senate Republicans voted down Democratic state Sen. David Haley’s amendment that would have clarified that the abortion ban did not apply to some forms of birth control — like IUDs and the morning-after bill — that interfere with fertilization.

“The majority of the public, I believe, don’t want to see birth control outlawed,” Haley said during a heated Senate floor debate.

But state Sen. Mary Pilcher-Cook (R) called the amendment “political high jinks.”

“This is just ridiculous,” Pilcher-Cook opined. “We should be focused on the bill instead of trying to make political points with amendments.”

Republicans also struck down a second amendment that would have exempted women who became pregnant through rape, incest or “aggravated indecency” because they were underage.

During the heated debate, Haley charged that conservative Republicans were trying to inflict “narrow Taliban-like philosophies on our state’s persons.”

The president of the Catholic League has had enough of HBO’s Bill Maher mocking his religion.

Earlier this week, Catholic League President Bill Donohue sent a letter asking Time Warner to have a “serious talk” with the atheist comedian.

“There is no other entertainer in the nation who has repeatedly spoken about the Catholic Church, especially its priests, in more vile and obscene terms than Bill Maher,” Donohue wrote to Time Warner Cable CEO Glenn Britt. “Vicious beyond belief, his remarks would be condemned – indeed he would be fired – if directed at any other demographic group. Over and over again he libels [sic] priests, portraying all of them as sexual abusers. And he does so with impunity.”

“Catholics need to know just how far Time Warner is prepared to play the role of spectator,” Donohue added. “From the enclosed report, it is evident that Maher’s bigotry is not merely visceral, it is relentless.”

“Time has come for someone in a position of responsibility to sit down and have a serious talk with this man.”

In the “New Rules” segment of his HBO Real Time talk show earlier this month, Maher had included Donahoe’s Catholic League as one of many conservative groups who try to appear larger than they really are.

Maher called the phenomenon “shit-kicker inflation, which is the problem of all things conservative being portrayed as way bigger than they really are.”

“The Catholic League is another group constantly in the news because they love to get freaked out about nonsense that would make even Pat Robertson go, ‘Oh for Christ sake, relax.’ But just as there aren’t a million moms in One Million Moms, there is no league in the Catholic League. It’s one guy with a fax machine.”

On the most recent episode of Real Time, Maher had weighed in on the selection of a the new pope, suggesting that the Catholic Church had been “running a child-sex ring since forever and you still keep your customers.”

A failed Republican mayoral candidate says that he has raised enough money to give away dozens of shotguns in the same town where former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) and 18 other people were shot.

Former mayoral candidate Shaun McClusky told Tucson Weekly that he was leading a Tucson chapter of the Armed Citizen Project, which launched in Houston earlier this year to prove that more guns mean less crime. McClusky said that he had already gotten $12,000 in pledges, enough to arm at least three dozen people.

Participants in high-crime neighborhoods “will receive a cleaning kit, they’ll receive the shotgun, they’ll receive slugs, they’ll go through a background check and they’ll also go through the training class,” McClusky explained.

The shotgun giveaway program was expected to kick off in Pueblo Gardens, Midvale Park and the Grant-Campbell area in the next 30 to 45 days. Residents could have new shotguns in their hands within 60 days.

But Ward 6 Councilman Steve Kozachik (D) insisted that the people with the Armed Citizen Project “have lost their minds.”

“For someone to say it makes sense to be giving away loaded shotguns in high-crime areas is absolute lunacy,” Kozachik explained.

Democratic Councilwoman Regina Romero accused McClusky of “stereotyping” neighborhoods like Midvale, where she said people “don’t need a gun to survive.”

“McClusky is not only out of touch with Midvale, but he is reckless in promoting such a ridiculous idea,” Romero told the Arizona Daily Star .

Arizona State University professor of criminology Travis Pratt called the giveaway a “a dangerous political stunt” that was “unlikely produce any crime reducing benefits.”

Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA) is wooing Georgia voters with tales of his hunting prowess as part of an effort to be the next senator from Georgia.

During a recent interview with the National Review, Broun bragged about the various exotic dead animals that decorate his Capitol Hill office.

“One politico says that Broun made the final decision to pursue a congressional career during his days as a volunteer lobbyist for the Safari Club International, a group that advocates for conservation and hunters,” the National Review‘s Betsy Woodruff wrote. “Broun remains an avid hunter. When I stopped by his Hill office, the first thing I noticed was that hunting trophies covered almost every wall. When he had to move offices a few months ago, the movers made quite a scene parading the heads of wild animals through the halls of the Rayburn House Office Building.”

“If I shoot it, I’m gonna eat it,” Broun told Woodruff, pointing out that warthog was especially delicious.

“I had roast warthog, it was cooked in a French style. I’m a French cook myself, and I like to cook things with some fancy sauces and stuff that I’ll make at home. That was excellent.”

The lion that he killed, however, “wasn’t particularly tasty.”

“It was kind of chewy, but I ate it too,” he explained.

In 2010, Broun took Roll Call along on a tour of his office.

“I’ve eaten everything that’s in here,” the Georgia Republican insisted. “This lion came from Zimbabwe. After eating this animal, the natives called me Boss Mashumba, which means Boss Lion. They had never seen a guy come and actually eat a lion. It’s not very good.”

“It was the Second Amendment and hunting that started the process of my understanding what the Constitution is all about and what we have lost in the way of freedom,” he added. “And I’m here to try to restore it.”

Conservative Fox News host Bill O’Reilly on Wednesday blasted Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-WI) for “obscuring” important issues by falsely claiming that President Barack Obama had someone designated to walk his dog.

On Tuesday, Bachmann had fled CNN cameras after reporter Dana Bash confronted her about the claims she had made at the Conservative Political Action Conference over the weekend.

As the congresswoman briskly walked away, she claimed that the speech had been about the president’s failures in Benghazi.

During his Wednesday broadcast, O’Reilly said that Bachmann had also refused to talk to him.

“This would be much ado about nothing if not for the fact that trivial attacks on President Obama obscuring serious problems in this country,” the Fox News host explained. “[E]very other president in history has lived in comfort, and it looks like President Bush the younger had a bigger White House budget than Barack Obama does. This is a trivial pursuit and Michele Bachmann made a mistake pursuing it.”

“Mr. Obama is entitled to convenience, protection and comfort as he runs the nation,” O’Reilly added. “Congresswoman Bachmann and all opponents of Mr. Obama should zero in on what’s really important: the president’s failure to deal with out-of-control spending and his core belief that America’s not a fair country. That’s what’s important, not who’s walking the presidential dog. By the way, that’s the gardener who walks the dog. And he’s always walked the dog!”

“It’s long past time for partisans on both on both the right and the left to cut the nonsense and look at things clearly… Michele Bachmann is playing small ball with the president.”

In a recent non-scientific poll on O’Reilly’s website, 55 percent disagreed that conservatives help Obama by criticizing him for “crazy stuff.”

The Fox station in Connecticut is apologizing after its news team used generic footage of a woman’s breasts for a report on International Women’s Day.

On at least two occasions on Wednesday, Fox Connecticut marked an event hosted by the Permanent Commission on the Status of Women with B-roll of a woman in a low-cut top, but the shot was closely cropped to reveal only her breasts and cleavage.

“FOX CT apologizes for today’s file footage error,” the station tweeted on Wednesday afternoon. “We will continue to recognize great contributions of women in CT and around the world.”

In a statement, the Permanent Commission on the Status of Women accused the news broadcast of objectifying women.

“We are appalled at the level of sexism this incident shows,” the statement said. It is an insult not only to the Permanent Commission on the Status of Women and to all who attended Women’s Day at the Capitol, which marked the PCSW’s 40-year battle against gender discrimination, but to women everywhere who are tired of being objectified.”

“Anyone who doubts the existence of the ‘war on women’ need look no further than Fox News. We invite the executives at Fox to ask about our Sexual Harassment Awareness and Prevention trainings, which would help them and their staff learn a little more about what goes on above a woman’s shoulders.”

Florida’s Republican lieutenant governor on Tuesday resigned amid questions about her connection to an Internet gambling firm that that is being investigated for racketeering, money laundering and lying about how much it donated to veterans.

Florida Department of Law Enforcement sources told News 13 that Lieutenant Gov. Jennifer Carroll submitted her resignation to Gov. Rick Scott (R) on Tuesday after she was interviewed about her links to Allied Veterans of the World, a nonprofit which operates Internet cafes in Florida.

“Lt. Gov. Carroll resigned in an effort to keep her former affiliation with the company from distracting from the administration’s important work on behalf of Florida Families,” Scott’s chief-of-staff Adam Hollingsworth explained to The Florida Times-Union .

Allied Veterans co-owner Jerry Bass, his lawyer and two top officers from Jacksonville’s Fraternal Order of Police were arrested on Tuesday after a raid on Internet cafes run by the nonprofit. Investigators suspect that Allied Veterans may have been using the Internet cafes for illegal gambling, money laundering, mail fraud and racketeering. The organization also may have lied when it said that it that it gave 70 percent of $290 million in profit to charity. Documents reportedly showed that only 2 percent were given to qualified nonprofits.

Carroll had been featured in a commercial for Allied Veterans in 2010 and she owned the firm 3N & JC, which did consulting work for the nonprofit organization.

As a member of the state House in 2010, Carroll came under fire for a conflict of interest after she proposed a bill to formally legalize gambling at Internet cafes. She later withdrew the bill and claimed a staffer had filed it without her knowledge.

Carroll was also accused of falsifying documents in 2011 that would have made her firm eligible for Jackson County grants for minority-owned companies, according to the Times-Union. Forged leased documents made it appear that the Clay County firm was located in Jackson County.

In 2012, Carroll responded to rumors that she was having a lesbian affair by asserting that women who look like her “don’t engage in relationships like that.”
