Why would my doc start my first treatment with 40mg of Paxil? isn't that too much?

This guy seemed clueless. I believe it was the first time he encountered SA and he's like 60 years old. He spent 30 mins online probably reading about this condition, then he sent me out in the waiting room and asked for a younger doc to join in and consult with him.

Then he asked me back and gave me 40mg Paxil 2 times/day. (well of course... that's wikipedia's first choice)... 20mg in the morning, 20 in the evening.

Why would this guy give me this in the evening and start me with such a massive dose? I've been reading it lasts 12 hours in the blood, so he intends to keep me hooked up 24h/day with this crap.

I just wanted some benzos.

Been testing in the past days half 0.25mg xanax pills and they do wonders for me before social situations, but he said they are just temporary (for the first month SSRI side effects i suppose) and will stop prescribing eventually.

Should i take just 20mg once/day like everyone else and lie to him? I've been reading a lot about this, and 40mg to start with is massive and Very hard to quit eventually, specially if this guy plans to up the dose in the next months. what the hell!

If i'll go back and tell him i'm not willing to medicate with SSRI, and ask for benzos he will probably think i lied about my condition just to get xanax and sell it; or he will lock me in the loony bin (because i went to a psychiatric hospital just to benefit from free treatment thanks to my insurance)
